Matakariki Mareikura Ball

Tēnā koutou katoa,

In the early hours of the morning on Saturday 4th February 2017, whanau gathered at Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga to celebrate the Opening of the ‘Kahungunu Taikura Kurupounamu’ and ‘He Manu Tioriori’ exhibitions directed by Curator, Ngatai Huata symbolised through.\'The Raising of the Flags’ ‘Te Pikinga a Ngā Haki with the Sunrise Karakia Huakirangi.  These exhibitions feature over 200 portraits of Kahungunu tipuna photographed by Samuel Carnell between 1860 to 1910, and whānau portraits up to 2015 by other photographers and artists; accompanied by a lecture series and Music Symposium - a wonderful opportunity to hear stories of loved ones written by family of those exhibited in the portraits and photographs and musical performances.  Photographs have been carefully mounted by Ngatai and her dedicated team at the following venues, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga Te Manawa Gallery, onsite at Kahungunu Park in the Kahungunu PāVillion @ Te Matatini 2017, the Hastings CBD ARTS INC, and soon they will be exhibited at the Waipatu RSA 28th Māori Battalion Hall (Wharekai) between the 3-15 July 2017. These exhibitions have attracted over 30,000 visitors who have not only come to view these photographs, but to listen to the passionate stories at the lecture series, and enjoy the Showcases and performances  of the Music Symposium.

In July the exhibitions will close with a Music Symposium showcasing the ‘Matariki Māreikura Whatukura\' Static Exhibition and \'He Manu Tioriori\'  Virtual Exhibition.

To celebrate this grand finale we present the ‘Matariki Māreikura Ball 2017’ – A Celebration of Our Māreikura – Wahine Leadership, and  Showcasing the Music, the Bands, Big Bands, the Showbands, the Musicians, the Singers,  Legacy of Music of  the 1930\'s -  the 60\'s. passed on from our many ancestors -  musicians, singers and entertainers. There are only 120 tickets for sale.
